The petition was filed in the High Court in the wake of the recent eviction drive in Vasant Kunj in South Delhi. This eviction drive is being carried out in an area where Bengali migrant workers from West Bengal mainly live. It is alleged that the eviction drive is being carried out in the name of identifying Bangladeshis among them. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself made this allegation yesterday.

Mamata said, ‘I am deeply shocked and disturbed to hear the news of a series of horrific incidents of harassment coming out of Jai Hind Colony in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi. This settlement was originally built by Bengali-speaking people, who are an important part of the unorganized labor force that built Delhi.’

After Mamata’s statement, an appeal was filed in the court against the incident. However, she did not do so. Another case regarding the eviction of Bengalis from the state of Odisha was also pending in the High Court in this regard.

Mamata Banerjee said in a statement, it is heard that their water supply has been stopped on the orders of the BJP-led government. A few days ago, electricity was suddenly disconnected and electricity meters were removed.

The Calcutta High Court of the state of West Bengal has asked the Union Home Ministry to provide details about the eviction of Bengalis in Delhi. The court took this initiative in response to a petition filed within 24 hours of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleging an ‘anti-Bengali’ ‘scam’ across India.

The petition was filed in the High Court in the wake of the recent eviction drive in South Delhi’s Vasant Kunj. The eviction drive is taking place in an area where mainly Bengali migrant workers from West Bengal live. It is alleged that the eviction drive is being carried out in the name of identifying them as Bangladeshis.

This settlement was mainly built by Bengali-speaking people, who are an important part of the unorganized labour force that built Delhi.’

The petition against the incident was filed in the court after Mamata’s statement. But he did not do that. Another case regarding the eviction of Bengalis from the state of Odisha was also pending in the High Court regarding this issue.

Mamata Banerjee said in a statement, it is heard that their water supply has been stopped on the orders of the BJP-led government. A few days ago, the electricity was suddenly disconnected and the electricity meter was removed.

The residents have alleged that the water tank they had arranged with their own money was blocked with the help of the Delhi Police and the RAF.

Mamata Banerjee said, ‘At the moment, a kind of forced eviction is going on. However, this case is pending in the court after an unwanted intervention by the Delhi Police in this regard last December. If these fundamental rights like shelter, water and electricity are trampled like this, then how can we claim to be a democratic republic?’

The Calcutta High Court has sought details from the Union Home Ministry on Friday within 24 hours of Mamata’s statement. The Chief Secretary of the West Bengal government has also been directed to inform the court separately in this regard. He will also have to talk to the Chief Secretary of Delhi in this regard.

It is learnt through various newspaper reports that a portion of these workers have already been pushed to neighboring Bangladesh. The petitioners’ lawyer informed the High Court that one of them is an eight-year-old child. In that context, the Calcutta High Court gave this order.
